Part of the credit for this blog goes to Adam since his comment gave me the idea of doing this.
I think all Stars fans (and fans of other teams) have superstitions about what to wear, eat, etc when the Stars play. I know I have plenty of weird superstitions, and they get even stranger once the playoffs start.
I wear the same thing when I attend games. The only part of my ensemble that changes is the jersey I wear. I hate to assign jerseys as being good luck or bad luck. Hey, they cost $300, I’m not going to stop wearing one because the Stars lose a game! Then jeans and shoes I wear are only worn to Stars games. I wear the same underwear too.. but I won’t go into that.
Pre-game meals are also a big deal. We always eat somewhere in the West End before games. Spiatza’s is my favorite, and the Stars seem to win most of the times we eat there. Some restaurants get black-listed though. The first was Tony Roma’s. The first time we ate there before a game, the Stars lost. The second time we ate there was the night Salei hit Modano and we got to watch him hauled off the ice on a stretcher. We never ate there again before a game, and now they’re out of business.
Last season, Sarah and I tried Gator’s for the first time on a Sunday afternoon. The food was pretty good, but the Stars ended up playing terribly and they lost 4-0 to San Jose. Gator’s was put on “probation” for this season. I’ll try going back again next season, but if the Stars play terribly or someone gets hurt, it’s done.
It gets more important during the playoffs. For Game 1, I pick a Stars shirt and wear it the day of the game. If they lose the game, I put that shirt away for the playoffs and move onto another one. If they win, I wear it again for the next game. This continues until the Stars get out of the playoffs or I run out of shirts. I haven’t run out of shirts yet. When we play series against west coast teams, I take a pregame nap and prepare to sit down in front of the TV with Sarah on the phone an hour before the game starts.
At home, my dad and I each have a conch shell that we blow when the Stars score a goal. I’m sure we’ve woken neighbors up several times during late night playoff games. If I ever get to sit with the Havoc Fanatics, I hope to be the first person to have a conch shell in the section.
Oh, and I never wear red during the playoffs. Actually, looking around my rooms (here and at home) I realize that I don’t really own any red things.
So let me know, what are your weird superstitions or traditions for Stars games?
Amy
I don’t have many ‘superstitions’ or game-day rituals really.
I always listen to a mix cd with my Dallas Stars mix on game days. Always wear Stars shirts and hoodies on game days. I save my jerseys for game days, but will only wear the jersey if the player is playing. I haven’t gotten to wear my Chris Conner jersey since December 23rd sadly lol Usually I wear my Brenden Morrow jersey (considering it was the only jersey I owned until this season), though I wore my Robi jersey last game. I wear with my black flip flops with silver Stars on them or my actual Dallas Stars flip flops on game days.
Usually if I’m going to the game, I also wear green eyeliner and gold eyeshadow.
Then of course, after we go to games we stop at Bueno by Cat’s place heh. That’s definitely become a ritual and makes me crave Bueno everytime they play.

Sarah and I do the same thing! My dad always makes fun of us because we spend more time getting ready for a hockey game than school, dinner, parties, etc.
I usually only wear a player’s jersey if he’s playing, but I only have Modano and Morrow jerseys so I was out of luck for most of the games I went to last season.

Oh man!
I got my Morrow jersey for my 20th birthday, and my mom had gotten me tickets for the game that night, and it was one of the only games Brenden didn’t play that season. He was out for a chest contusion. I was not pleased. We also lost, as we seem to always do when we play on my birthday.
i always stop before the game and get a dr pepper at sonic (has to be sonic). i only wear stars shirts & sweatshirts (i dont own a jersey yet….boo). i keep wearing the sweatshirt as long as they win and i only wash it if they lose. i have to sit in an odd numbered seat if im at the game. and on the way to the game, i have to listen to justin timberlake’s futuresex/lovesounds album (listened to it for the first few games of the season and they won – when ive tried to switch it up, they lost). im sure there are others, but i cant remember them right now, but those are the big ones.
I think that I have you beat with my crazy superstitions . I am VERY superstitious about hockey .
On game day :
I only dress from left to right (left arm in shirt first , left leg in pants first , left sock on first , etc. etc.)
I do the same thing all season with my Stars T-shirts as Amy does . If the Stars lose when I wear said T-shirt , it never comes back out on game day except for by freak accident (which has happened and some shirts have recieved second-chances) .
When the game has started :
I NEVER turn my computer on . Everytime I have , Our Stars have lost . Nobody in the house can use the thing when the game is on and it annoys my wife to no end .
If I drink one beer (it has to be Molson Canadian and no other brand) each period during the game , Our Stars usually win . They have only lost three times out of all the times that I have done that (and I have done that often , just obviously not this month as it gets expensive and can interfere with my work schedule)
I hate missing games and being forced to tape them because of work . Our Stars only win less than half of the time I am forced to miss the games .
I have been told I am very weird for these superstitions . Sadly , that is not even really all of them .
Adam – drink more beer! I will send you money for it! That HAS to be the reason we suck this month – you aren’t drinking enough!!!
Another one of the superstitions Amy and I have is that we have to take a picture of the two of us at whatever place we’re eating at. Every time we do, we win….and we forgot to on the 19th vs the ducks. It’s all our fault! Also, every time we head to the game we have to walk through the alley past the old west end marketplace and Spiatza and under the overpass to this corner with a huge green star on the pavement and we have to do “spin-age” as we have called it. We get in the middle of the star and link arms and spin in a few circles. Yeahhhh it’s goofy but it’s tradition!
When I’m at home watching the game, if the guys score when I’m sitting some certian way/position I have to stay in that spot for the entire game (excluding bathroom breaks).

That is too cute!
My ritual is as follows:
– I can only wear Stars shirts/jerseys/sweatshirts/whatever that day.
– Either my fingernails or my toenails must be painted green.
– The Star earrings come out – I have two different pairs, I wear both at the same time. Some say overload, I say devotion.
– The green eyeliner and shades of green eyeshadow comes out.
– And, as Jen mentioned, the Bueno tradition. Mmmm, Bueno.
I try not to be too superstitious about it or anything, but I’ve failed at that miserably.
i am so glad that everyone here is as weird as i am with their superstitions!! all the people at work thing i’m a psycho. i don’t feel so alone now.
You should not feel alone in your psychosis . It is obvious that we are all crazy too . That is what makes it really fun . Crazy people who are crazy about what you are crazy about is the bomb !
These are awesome guys! It’s really great to know that I’m not the only crazy one.
Adam, I always get dressed left before right… I was so happy when they interviewed Brenden before a game and he said he got dressed left to right also.

Now, if you will all lie down on the sofa and tell me when you first started to have these obsessive compulsive thoughts….
Wait! is this going to happen to me?!? Do I still have time to save myself?!? Nah, I’m a goner….
i dont know if anyone else heard Razor (during the april 4 phoenix game) talking about the bad-luck-shaking 360’s the guys do when they are losing games on the team plane or while they are in the penalty box, but apparently according to Morrow & Ott that’s what they do to ward off the bad luck. im totally going to start doing that during games now…i just thought that was a funny one to add to the superstitions list…
Yeah, I heard that Jenn, and I thought exactly the same thing. I did that when Phoenix scored the second goal, and then Mikey scored an empty-netter right after!
Amy
thats AWESOME. it DOES work!! im going to be spinning like crazy at the game on sunday. they will probably ask me to leave the AAC because i will be freaking people out!

Let’s just hope you don’t have to spin around in the first place!
