One of the random, yet great things I love about hockey is the names. Hockey players have, by far, the best names in all of sports! Our Stars have had some great ones in Lundqvist, Miettinen, Turco, Lehtinen, Langenbrunner, Tjarnqvist, Niewyndyk ect, but I’d say the Chicago Blackhawks take the cake on this one; Byfuglien, Khabibulin, Zyuzin, Wisniewski, and Bourque all on one team! I can only imagine the stress some young announcers would have encountering those names for the first time!
Kwiatkowski (Atlanta), Afinogenov (Buffalo), Bouwmeester (Florida), Devereaux (Toronto), Beauchemin (Anaheim), Isbister (Vancouver), and Woywitka (St. Louis) are some of best in the league. Having such diverse backgrounds in the talent pools each team draws from makes hockey one of the more fascinating sports to watch little things like names. Sure, you’ve got your Smith’s and Jones’ and such, but you’ve also got the impossibly long and the obscure. Name-watching is one of my tiny little pleasures in watching hockey….besides the hockey part.
Dan Hinote. A not-so-ordinary name, yet not really odd though, right? Sure, but take a moment and think of his team. Got it yet? None other than the St. Louis Blues! I know, it’s pathetic, but I get a kick out of it.
There are two groups of names I’d LOVE to see out on the ice together, or at least on the same team:
Cheechoo, Tootoo, and the Ruutuu’s. It just sounds great. Grant it, both Ruutuu’s are right-wingers and Cheechoo and Tootoo are both left-wingers and only two at a time would probably be on the ice at a time, it’d still be great.
Wisniewski, Wozniewski, Visnovsky, Vishnevski, and Vishnevskiy. Now, that would be an amazing group of defenseman to try to call a game with! Soon, maybe, our Ivan Vishnevskiy will get his chance on the team and we’ll play Vitaly Vishnevski and his New Jersey Devils. That would entertain me to no end!
What are some of your favorite hockey names of all-time?
